About ALLDATA
ALLDATA is an online source for automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) information. ALLDATA provides vehicle manufacturers’ diagnostic and repair information. ALLDATA is known for online OEM information, used by over 300,000 professional technicians worldwide. The company expanded its product line to include collision information, business tools and support services for the global automotive industry.
Mobile Automobile Diagnostic Tool
As the lead UX Designer, I worked with mechanics, manufacturers and developers to design the ALLDATA Mobile Diagnostic tool as well as a suite of automotive repair
tools to manage any automotive service. The diagnostic tool could be used to instantly find a solution to any vehicles issue as well as plug into the device to trigger an OBDII device so that any mechanic can quickly find the vehicles OEM information to assess and understand the issue, to verifying repairs were completed correctly and diagnose any additional issues with the vehicle.
The mobile diagnostic application was available in multiple platforms including iOS and Android. ALLDATA Mobile is a subscription based service with low monthly cost of $39.00 and was greatly received by mechanics over the nation as it reduced the mechanics wait time when searching for results by delivering the information in
an intuitive interface based on the vehicle and manufacturer data.
The Approach

Worked in an Agile software project (Java environment) process management environment with 100+ user stories and multiple epics across different projects overseeing design from inception to design, development to implementation for multiple digital services

Organized customer and stakeholder requirements by conducting interviews to define and clarify each project’s vision, limitations, and paths to success

Worked with UI developers to establish the company’s dynamic style guide, using Axure to manage all conceptual modeling, documentation standards to be utilized by multiple platforms

Lead the creation of wireframes, user personas, detailed storyboards, scripted scenarios, flow charts, functional prototypes for user testing, and interaction design specifications using HTML5, JavaScript, Bootstrap (v3), and CSS

Analyzed and documented user requirement specifications, information architecture and interaction goals to manage expectation

Lead the requirements gathering and documenting required for user testing, in the field and online, for digital software applications using various platforms

Designed components used throughout all web assets

Lead discovery, planning and research identifying and documenting user types, user stories and usability testing and validation

Created user requirements and functional requirements to validate user goals and task flows
The Result
AllData Mobile is now available in iOS and Android. The tool is so easy to use that a version was developed to sell directly to AutoZone customers.
AllData Mobile diagnostic tool. Connecting a wireless OBD connector to the automotive port will pull in data about the car. The user has access to a well of information and it also stores information of previous connections, which is important for mechanics when switching between repairs.
Wireframes were used to convey interaction design for many of the AllData products.
